Good health means a happier and more fulfilling lifestyle. When you are healthy you can concentrate on your work and achieve the things that you want to. However, people have only just realized the kind of issues that are caused due to toxins in the air, water and the food that we eat. The doctor’s bills are a huge burden on the pocket too.
The good thing is that we are now realizing that preventive health care is far less heavy on the pocket. Preventive health care can be done with home remedies and natural ingredients like specific kind of foods.
Louis Pasteur, the French microbiologist who is known for his work in the area of vaccinations said, ‘The germ is nothing, the inner terrain is everything’. What he meant was that while there will be different kinds of germs and viruses in the body, it is the general flora and fauna of the internal system that dictates the overall health of an individual.
The Importance of pH
Seventy percent of our body is made up of water. The water and other fluids in the body have a certain acid to alkali ratio which is called the pH level. This ratio can range between 0 and 14 with 7 being neutral. A pH above 7 is alkaline and below 7 is acidic. A normal human body should maintain a pH between 6 and 7.5 for it to function properly and enabling it to fight any attacks that it may face.
When the body becomes slightly more acidic (below pH 6), it starts to cause a certain amount of auto-toxification or self-poisoning. The blood vessels constrict and result in lesser oxygen supply to the organs. It leads to a weak immune system that is prone to attack. Other effects include hormonal imbalances, tendency to gain weight, degenerative fatigue, fungal growth and aches and pains.
If the body is acidic, it tries to gain homeostasis by making the body more alkaline. This is achieved by extracting alkaline minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium from the internal organs of the body, making them weaker. Issues like osteoporosis are caused in this manner too. Obesity is a result of high acidic levels in the body because acid is stored in fat cells. And therefore, by maintaining an acidic diet, you are ensuring that your body is prone to storing fat cells as well.
Maintaining a Good pH Level
The number of health issues that you can avoid by controlling and managing the pH levels of your body is large. Here are some tips to help you manage this pH level.
- Monitor the pH level – Knowing what your pH level is will help you control it better. You can use a normal pH strip that is easily available. Normal urine pH should lie between 6 and 7. It is generally lower in the morning and rises slightly by evening. A good pH in urine indicates a good detoxification mechanism in your body. Saliva pH indicates the health of the digestive system.
- Notice tell-tale symptoms – Often we ignore some signs that our body gives us to indicate that things are not quite right inside. However, we tend to pop in a pill and suppress the symptom rather than looking for the cause of the issue. This is one of the biggest banes of modern allopathic medicine. Some of the symptoms to look for include indigestion, abdominal cramps, water retention, chronic fatigue, brittle nails, insomnia, low attention span, nausea, bad breath, varicose veins to name just a few.
- Eat right – If you are aware of the foods that increase the acidity in your system and those that help you stay alkaline you will be able to eat right with the help of pH monitoring. Foods that produce alkalinity in the body include fruits like apple, apricot, banana, blackberries, cantaloupe, dates, figs, lemon, lime, muskmelon, watermelon, oranges, peaches, pineapples, strawberries and raisins. Vegetables that produce alkalinity include barley grass, cabbages, carrots, beets, broccoli, peas, onions, garlic, spinach and greens, tomatoes, kale and cucumber among others. Almonds, chestnuts, millet and tofu are also alkaline. Other great foods to have that produce alkalinity are apple cider vinegar and probiotic cultures. Foods that produce acid include mostly all dairy products, grains, beans and legume, canned fruits, animal protein, fats, and processed foods.
Monitoring something as simple as the pH balance of your body can help you avoid many potential health issues that you may otherwise face, especially as you grow older. The youth are facing newer health issues each day. They are greying faster (even though that may be coloring it cosmetically) and they have higher number of health issues as compared to the previous generation. Something needs to stop this downward spiral and only preventive health care with the use of the right pH balance can make this happen.
