Happiness is such a thing that it is beyond quantification. You can feel and can remain in a particular mood through which you can make comfortable all your surroundings including yourself. It is the most appropriate measure of humanity’s progress and the goal of the authority who govern the administration of a particular notion. Many governments in the overseas countries not only put the focus on economic growth, but they assess people’s well-being and their level of happiness. The more they concentrate on this aspect, the more the people grow, and as a nation, that particular country will also prosper considerably. An under liking factor governs everything in our life. No one does anything without any cause. But all of us desire to be happy at the end. Show me one single person who likes to be unhappy because of his planned action. Except for a few countries in the world, if you inquire from the people that how much they are happy in their daily lives either they will keep quiet, or they will inform that it is transient. The experience of happiness is temporary. But people want this on long term basis. Why is it so? People are happy not because of their level of various accomplishments. The external factors make them happy. No sooner the craziness, say to get a promotion in the job or to become a prize-winning sportsman or shifting to a newly purchased house or acquiring a new electronic gadget, the people are back to the square of the drudgery of blue or white collar jobs.
The Bhagwad Gita professes that happiness derived from the senses and the objects lead to sorrow. That is why many billionaires are not happy despite the fact that they have the comfort of almost all the objects people can think. Most of our happiness falls into the category of fulfillment. The sources of such happiness, for example, costly gifts, any glamorous object, senses, other people or circumstances are not permanent. In one moment, it will come to you, and then suddenly the feeling of possession will be over. It will make you despair. The objects cannot provide you happiness on a continuous basis. That type of joy will be for the time being. It is imperative that one has to search for the state of bliss and beyond that level. At that level, one does not feel any need to feel any pleasure. You can question how it is possible for a person like me who will not be elated after being promoted to a coveted position. It is not possible for anyone, but it is not that difficult also for the person who has attained that blissful state. He is neither disturbed nor agitated by sorrow or any unwanted incidents as he is not harping for happiness. He is not behind to search for happiness. He is in the state of bliss- as per Gita. How one can attain this state? It is gaining full control over one’s emotions and intellect and by doing meditating on the Supreme. From this type of spiritual exercise, one can attain peace of mind which is the essence of happiness to continue for an extended period. If you want to have mental peace, Gita says that you must not look out for the fruits of your actions. Just do the work up to your level of satisfaction and focus on another activity. In reality, we do the opposite. Immediately after acting, we wait eagerly to receive the result. We also expect that it must bring profit or benefits for us. We cannot tolerate any negative output. Whoever is becoming favorable to renounce the fruit of all actions taking success and failure in the same way and remaining detached during his living, he can be in eternal bliss. The knowledge about the soul, which is the supreme, mind and the law of karma is beneficial for one to accept the equanimity in loss or gain and success or failure. We know that we are immortal souls playing our different roles on this earth, and we also create our destiny based on our actions and get the results of those performances. But we forget to see ourselves as victims of circumstances, the influence of societies, and the environment we attach ourselves. As per this principle, we accrue the benefits of the deeds performed by us in the past. At the same time, based on our various activities, we create the route of our future – good or bad. Our experiences are the consequences of actions in the present and past lives which are all recorded in the soul. And this determines the quality aspect of our future, of course, in line with our current actions. People mostly fail or cannot grow much because they don’t like to take the responsibilities for their works. Contrarily, when you take the responsibility of your works and actions, any adversity or different performance matrix cannot provide you sorrow. As we recognize it to be the fruit of past actions, we ignore and become happy without bothering much. We contend ourselves that our karmic burden is becoming lighter. Similarly, we don’t give any particular feat or thinking for our happiness knowing that whether right or wrong output will not produce any unhappiness anymore. When you reach this level of spiritual mind, it will motivate you to keep doing good as that is the only way to make you happy perpetually. Rest is not of any significance. If you can develop this type of attitude and can maintain a perspective accordingly, you can be an observer without any attachment for life.
Being detached does not mean that you forego all your responsibilities of life or you get away and observe different rules of life as a passing scene in the drama of life. It will allow you to see things as they are and take appropriate decisions. But when you get engrossed, you raise any questions about the existence and the happenings of various things. Do you put multiple question marks about the things why they are in that way? You also raise the question about the behavior of people and ask why they behave in a particular way. These sometimes cause dissatisfaction, frustration, irritation, and anger which will lead you to act in the ways which bring gloomy atmosphere.
When you live with a constant awareness of being a soul, the child of the supreme soul – you leave the cycle of fun and frolic, pleasure and pain and jealousness and favoring someone. In this way, you slowly reach a state of bliss. Then it has no dependence on any sensory evolution. Bliss is the original nature of the soul which is known as ‘sat chit and Anand Swaroop.’ It is the eternal truth, consciousness, and bliss.
