Do I know what is the accurate definition of RELIGION is? Does anyone know?
According to Merriam-Webster, Religion is “The service and worship of God or the supernatural, commitment or devotion to religious faith or observance and a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices”
So it can be said it is a doctrine, a set code of conduct which the human race is expected to follow and maintain their basic ethos and principles without causing any chaos to any caste or creed of people.
Is religion bad? NO. Are we supposed to ask questions about the age old rituals that sometimes we are asked to follow? YES, Questions should be asked.
It would cause a furor initially, but our brain needs a clear clarification of certain ritual observances, that has made our beliefs in the system of our personal religion firm and cemented since childhood.
I am a Hindu, a staunch Hindu. I do puja, I perform aartis, and incense sticks along with diyas are a part of my everyday devotional ritual.
But I fail to understand where is the clash if I want to go to a church on Christmas and light a candle and pray to the prophet? I can close my eyes in my Mandir at home and pray, I can close my eyes at a Church and pray and I can go to a Dargah, cover my head and pray with eyes closed. The devotion is same, the call from inside is same, then where is the difference?
I think Religion was formed to encompass a moral code governing the human behaviors. It is absolutely justified to follow a code of proper conduct, but not with fear. Yes religion inculcates FEAR in the minds of people. “If you don’t do this, all hell will break lose”- a common dialogue which resonates in almost every household.
Who has decreed what to do and what not to do? Has God Himself given an appearance and passed the sermon? No.
All HE wants is devotion, but not without questioning the unreasonable consumerism that the flag bearers of RELIGION are practicing.
The Almighty certainly did not approve to kill in the name of faith, to shed blood of another fellow human being to prove the supremacy of one religion over the other, to victimize children and hand them over guns when they should be given books to study. Why so much of animosity in the name of Religion?
Ages ago Shri Ramakrishna explained the theory in a very easy language, he said “We Hindus call Water as Jal, Mussalmans call it Paani and Christians call it Water. So where is the difference? Its function is same in whatever name one addresses it, it quenches thirst.” And still we are fighting.
We are en cashing on religions for winning vote banks by participating in Iftaar parties; we are siding with one religion over the other by showcasing our devotion by wearing a janau, going on a pilgrimage to Kedarnath, wishing Merry Christmas to win over a certain section of secular India.
Why this farce? Religion is personal. No matter which religion we follow, it is our personal choice; it cannot or should not be imposed on any one of us.
There is NO superhuman controlling power anywhere in the universe which will call upon doomsday in your life if you do not follow what you have been taught since you were born.
We are made to believe that we personally own God or Gods, no we don’t. We can only own up to the concepts of right and wrong, moral and immoral, truth and lies. HE is not our personal property and hence HE cannot be turned into commodity earning revenue.
Yes we fall back on our religion for comfort in the times of crisis, but only praying does not help. Actions have to be taken and implemented.
To conclude, the color of blood is same- RED, whether we slaughter a Hindu, a Muslim, a Christian, a Sikh, a Shinto, a Jew. The humanity gets slaughtered, the code of conduct which RELIGION primarily teaches us is murdered, and the unity is broken in the name of safeguarding one faith over the other.
Can this tumultuous riot of madness over Religion ever cease to exist?
