Successful people in their respective fields are always knowledgeable and the owners of excellent skills. They are very thorough about ins and outs of their industry. They are the masters of their subjects. By exercising the power of knowledge, they gain everyone’s respect and trust; and in the process become eminent. They take all measures to manage effectively their career and business. This effectiveness renders them enough courage and confidence to market their ability. They seem to be willing to learn new things, and show least reservations to changes which help them sharpen their knowledge.
A renowned psychologist Nikas Bozioneles talks about five big personality factors related to a successful career. Success may be intrinsic or extrinsic depending on the circumstances prevailed in one’s career. Intrinsic success is connected with job or career satisfaction, fulfillment of wishes, self worth, etc.; whereas extrinsic success relates to social status-quo, level of income, professional hierarchy, employability, etc.
Person’s behaviour is influenced by five dimensions which are known as five big personality traits. They are known as Neuroticism, Extroversion, Agreeableness, Openness and Conscientiousness. These personality traits play a vital role in anyone’s life to accomplish the tasks successfully and also to remain successful at workplace.
Neuroticism consisting of anxiety, anger, sadness, etc., makes you tensed. A tensed mind will not be in a position to focus on any activity undertaken by a person. For a successful career, one has to overcome neuroticism’s negative effects. Positive effects of neuroticism are seen when a person though tensed, is able to maintain his temper and can dilute the nervousness to take proper decisions. More you control the negative sides of neuroticism, more you balance your emotions. With the stable mind, you will be able to take decisions very correctly at the workplace.
Extroversion is a personality element which represents positivity. With this frame of mind a person observes his duties in a constructive way, and this approach enhances his chances of success. Further, positive outlook makes him enthusiastic and energetic and instills vigour and sincerity in him to carry out the responsibilities entrusted to him successfully. This also makes him socially acceptable, and each of his endeavours reflects the qualities of expressiveness and assertiveness.
Openness is a great quality by which a person embraces changes without reluctance. He considers the changes as opportunities to grow and transforms these opportunities into a success fetching events. Openness removes shortsightedness and behavioural complexity of a person and induces his ways of thinking to help him accept changes.
Agreeableness is also a significant personality factor by which a person confirms other’s opinions and thoughts. People, who have this quality, generally tend to comply with other’s action plans, sacrificing their own priorities. In today’s growth oriented strategy of modern management, if you apply this quality, you will earn lot of advantages. Agreeableness directs you to a solution of a complex problem and brings you a big success. People always get attracted to deal with you because of the quality of agreeableness.
The last personality factor of “Big Five” is Conscientiousness. This quality gives a person the ability to practice self discipline. It also makes the person more dutiful and believer of a goal oriented approach. This type of people thinks immensely before they start acting. They do not like irrational behaviour who avoid indulging into impulsive activities. They do not give importance to gratification. They stick to the rules and regulations and follow a set of principles and take utmost care in planning, organizing and prioritizing their activities.
Extroversion, neuroticism and conscientiousness play a very effective role to perform successfully. Extroversion and conscientiousness create desire to achieve targeted goal in a person. Success achieved through extroversion and conscientiousness could be categorized as an extrinsic success.
Extrovert people have the feeling of sociability, and they easily mingle with masses. This quality, if backed by conscientiousness, raises the significance of self discipline making a person more determined to his goals, no matter how hard they are.
On the contrary, neurotic people are more anxious and in this process trapped into a low level of confidence. They are less achiever. Neuroticism, though reflecting negativity, can work favourably if mingled with other personality factors. It reflects negativity both for intrinsic and extrinsic successes. Agreeableness scores positivity for an intrinsic success. People with agreeableness show more progress in their career, and remain content with their jobs. Their self worth value is quite high in the society.
People, who are eager to accept challenges, willing to learn and concentrate on the constructive feedback given by others, remain successful in their careers. They are more confident, self sustained and content with their career and social relationship. On the contrary, narrow-minded people are vulnerable to intrinsic success because they lack openness. If you are open-minded, you will be more successful in the new working environment, and would be able to maintain excellent relationship with your peers and colleagues. You will also be able to maintain good social relationship with your family members, relatives and friends. This personality trait will put you on the path of development, whereby you will be able to reach success in life.
All above, “big five” personality factors are interdependent to one another. Neuroticism though looks to be a negative trait prima-facie, produces good results when mingled with agreeableness and openness. Neuroticism equally plays a significant role in the achievement of a goal.
